Southwest Airlines Payment Sled
Boxclever and the MOST team collaborated with Southwest to deliver a new payment system for use during a flight. This collaboration brought together technical, servicing and usability requirements to inform the final design. The resulting system offers comprehensive protection for the iPad mini 6, incorporating a payment puck that can be magnetically attached for chip, swipe, and contactless payments. The design takes a consumer iPad and rethinks it as a professional payment device. Easily disassembled for repair and refurbishment, every component and module is replaceable.
In order to meet the PCI certification requirements of the payment system within a short delivery schedule, the redesign of an existing payment puck was not possible, and due to regulations it could not be covered within an integrated housing. To achieve visual consistency, the colour and finish of the case were aligned with it. The payment puck was transformed into a module that can be magnetically affixed, allowing flight attendants to easily switch the card swipe orientation left or right according to their preference, as well as allowing a future upgrade path to use other modules. The USB-C connection allows both the iPad and payment module to charge concurrently, a must in a fast moving in-flight retail environment
Play Sled
The Play sled is a simple Android phone case which was developed to magnetically attach the payment device. This securely locates both phone and PINPad together as a payment device, while allowing the PINPad to be rotated depending on how the flight attendant presents it to the customer.
